The Book Sales Process: An Overlooked and Important Consideration for Your Book

October 18th, 2011

When authors call me to inquire about publishing or marketing services for their books, they are often stumped by one of my questions. When I ask about the sales process for the book, the phone line goes silent.

It is understandable. Most authors are so thrilled to have their manuscripts completed that they have not been able to look past getting that final page written. Many are not familiar with the term sales process, especially when it pertains to books. Thinking about the sales process may not be as thrilling as dreaming about appearing on the cover of a magazine or interviewing on the Today Show.

Yet, the sales process is a crucial ingredient to your book’s success.

Simply put, the sales process is the path that your book buyers will take to get your book into their hands.

There are several different options available. You may:

  • Sell your book on your website and personally mail it to buyers
  • Sell your book on your website and pay someone to ship it to buyers
  • Sell your book on your website and hire a distribution company to ship it
  • Sell your book on Amazon.com and other online book sellers who will mail your book directly to buyers
  • Hire a book distributor to market your book to bookstores and other wholesale outlets as well as ship books to both individual buyers and stores
  • Seek a traditional publisher who will handle all the sales and distribution in exchange for the lion’s share of the profits
  • Sell your book electronically for reading on Kindle, Nook, iPad, and other electronic readers

There are a few very basic things to consider as you contemplate these options:

International Book Fairs – A Gateway to the World of Opportunities

October 15th, 2011

Is it worth visiting international book fairs? Many authors consider it to be wastage of time. However, in my opinion events such as book expo America, book fairs held in Frankfurt, Beijing, London and so on serve as a “gateway to the world of opportunities” for newbie as well as established authors. These exhibits, expos, and events attract a large number of people from the publishing community as well as literature lovers from across the world.

The international book fair is actually a venue for publishing and media companies in making and closing deals regarding the rights, licenses and distribution of literary works. These expos take place at different venues, spread all across the year. As the statistics goes over 3,00,000 people gather at each of these fairs, including thousands of trade exhibitors that present a wide array of collection – almost reaching half a million books.

The international book fairs are a great source for publishers and authors to market their titles. Various marketing agencies and other intermediaries provide space and other facilities to publishers & authors. The fair provides a great opportunity to newbie as well as established authors to interact with the largest gathering of publishers, agents, distributors, translators, journalists and more on the Earth.

The international book fairs are making it easier than ever for publishing professionals to connect with the industry leaders. These events provide a unique way of finding a publicist or book editor and to learn about innovations in the publishing industry. In reality participation in these fairs is a win – win situation for both authors as well as publishers.
